Moody Press: True To Scripture?

Moody Press, which boasts of being, “The Name You Can Trust,” is an alleged Christian publishing house. As such, they pride themselves in publishing books that are true to scripture, Christ and His gospel. Multitudes worldwide, however, who rest their eternal hopes on the teaching published by “The Name You Can Trust” might be shocked to find that Moody Press should not be trusted.

By way of example, Moody Press published How Can You Be Sure That You Will Spend Eternity With God (Chicago: Moody Press, 1996) by Erwin W. Lutzer. And in this book, spread around the globe by Moody Press, Dr. Lutzer wrote:

The question is not whether we can remember the day or the hour in the past, but whether our faith is in Christ in the present. Are we now persuaded that Christ met all of our obligations for us when he died on the cross (p. 129).

If you, my friend, are convinced in your heart that Christ paid your debt, and you are resting your eternal soul on Christ and nothing else, you too are saved (p. 115).

At first glance such teaching actually seems quite scriptural. Who in their right mind would argue against the idea that saving faith must be directed to Christ alone? Nonetheless, under color of exalting Christ, Dr. Lutzer and Moody Press may actually dethrone Christ.

You see, in accordance with Dr. Lutzer’s teaching Christ alone is often rhetorical code meaning that an alleged Christian who rejects the faith or even seeks salvation through some way other than through Christ alone will still tread on streets of gold. That is, “Christ alone” means that no works (in kind or degree) ever affects salvation–even rejecting the gospel and “Christ alone.” What? You might think, we’re only saved by “Christ alone,” but those who reject “Christ alone” are yet saved? Ridiculous I know, but this is Lutzer’s position. Allow me to illustrate, kindly consider Hebrews 6:4-6:

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Now, regarding this passage Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer writes and Moody Press publishes:

We have to admit the author is talking about true Christians in this passage…Yes, believers can “fall away”… they were beginning to doubt whether Christ was fully sufficient… The point is that so long as they were returning to the Old Testament sacrifices, they could not be brought back to repentance. Understandably, they could not be brought back to fellowship with God while they were offering lambs on the alter… Yes, believers can fall away, but not to eternal damnation (p. 150).

Unbelieving believers who sacrifice animals on pagan altars will be saved? Is it harmonious to teach on the one hand that “a wrong faith leads to destruction” yet on the other to promise heaven to those who abandon the faith altogether and prove it by sacrificing animals on pagan altars for the forgiveness of sins? We are saved by Christ alone, insists Dr. Lutzer, yet the blatant abomination and no faith of Christ rejecters still leads to paradise? Ridiculous contradiction!

Dr. Lutzer’s rhetoric is just that - meaningless rhetoric. Contradictions are the clearest evidence of error and misinterpretation. Moody Press and Dr. Lutzer have grievously erred on basic principles. Do not be duped by “The Name You Can Trust.” Moody Publishers can not be trusted.

Moody Press: True To D. L. Moody?

Moody Publishers or Moody Press, markets themselves as being “The Name You Can Trust.” In this, Moody proposes to Christians that they are true to scripture and to Christ. Masses the world over, however, who lean their eternal hopes on the doctrine published by “The Name You Can Trust” might be astonished to find that Moody Press should never be trusted.

By way of example, Moody Press published How Can You Be Sure That You Will Spend Eternity With God (Chicago: Moody Press, 1996) by Erwin W. Lutzer. And in this book, spread around the globe by Moody Press, Dr. Lutzer wrote:

Even a weak faith saves if it is directed to Christ alone. But a wrong faith leads to destruction even it is held with unwavering confidence (p. 134).

If you, my friend, are convinced in your heart that Christ paid your debt, and you are resting your eternal soul on Christ and nothing else, you too are saved (p. 115).

Upon initially reading these statements they seem to be quite scriptural. And they are. Surely no Christian would disagree with the idea that if a person is going to be saved his faith must be directed to Christ alone. Nevertheless, under the flag of magnifying Christ, Erwin Lutzer and his publisher, Moody Press, may actually oust Christ.

According to Erwin Lutzer’s doctrine, salvation through “Christ alone” is often theological double-speak meaning that a professing believer who turns from the faith or even seeks salvation through some means other than Christ alone will still be welcomed into God’s eternal paradise. What I mean is this: when Lutzer (and Moody Publishers) uses the term Christ alone he means that no work (of any type or degree) ever impacts salvation–even rejecting “Christ alone.” It sounds ludicrous (and it is!), but hang in there as I illustrate. Consider Hebrews 6:4-6:

To believe wrongly leads to destruction, resolutely asserts the doctor, yet the blatant rebellion and wrong faith of Christ rejecters leads to heaven? Painfully obvious contradiction!

Friend, when the blind lead the blind they both fall in a ditch. Dr. Lutzer and Moody Press do not understand foundational Christian concepts and as such they lend salvation assurance where none exists. Don’t be deceived By “The Name You Can Trust.” Moody Press is not to be trusted.

Our emotional life needs to be healthy to resist bad feelings! Our bodies must be healthy ot resist the invasion of germs! We require a healthy gut that can digest bad influences! Our hearts need to be healthy so that they can tell the difference between life and disease! And we need a healthy astral body that allows our vital force to glow!

As a homoeopath, I have had an awarenes for some time that having a desire to go to war with others is pathology. The desire to inflict physical harm or death on another is pathology. The desire to steal from your neighbour and envy them is pathology. The desire to inflict pain on others is pathology.

HIV/AIDS results from a very dangerous virus. It kills thousands every month in Africa. Medical historian Harris Coulter talked about the association between the two diseases, AIDS and syphillis back in 1987. Those of us that practise as homoeopaths know that destructive forces such as these belong to the syphillitic miasm. In many cases we see the shocking effects of this in our practices.

The first symptom of the syphillitic miasm is VIOLENCE! Rewriting Reformation History and Chuck Swindoll

In his magnum opus, The Grace Awakening, Charles R. (Chuck) Swindoll presents himself as taking up “the torch of freedom” as brandished by protestant Reformers such as Martin Luther. In this he leads his readers to believe that by following him and his teaching in The Grace Awakening that they are being true to historical Reformation teaching on the doctrines of grace and faith alone. Consider:

“Achievement must accompany sincere faith … We continue to hear that “different gospel” and it is a lie. It is heresy. It is antithetical to the true message that lit the spark to the Reformation: Sola Fide - faith alone” (The Grace Awakening, p.86).

“When sixteenth-century European Reformers raised the torch of freedom and withstood the religious legalists of their era, grace was the battle cry: salvation by grace alone a walk of faith without fear of eternal damnation” (The Grace Awakening, p. xiv).

True, the “spark that lit the reformation,” as Swindoll states, was Sola Fide or faith alone. However, the Reformers did not understand their theological terms as Chuck Swindoll does. Swindoll’s understanding of grace maintains, “regardless of how you choose to live, you can’t live so bad that God says to you, ‘you’re no longer mine’” (Shedding Light On Our Dark Side, tape sld 1A). Swindoll’s confidence in the inevitable salvation of even the most corrupt necessitates his elimination of the biblical and Reformation joining of works to genuine faith.

In essence, Dr. Swindoll aligns himself with the Reformers and leaves the uninformed reader with the idea that his views on grace and faith are the same as those of the Reformers, which they are not. Contrary to Swindoll, Luther taught that works or “human achievement,” as Swindoll says, go hand in hand with genuine, saving faith. Consider Luther’s teaching:

“Faith must of course be sincere. It must be a faith that does good works through love. If faith lacks love it is not true faith. Thus the Apostle bars the way of hypocrites to the kingdom of God…To believe, “If faith justifies without works, let us not work,” is to despise the grace of God. Idle faith is not justifying faith. In this terse manner Paul presents the whole life of a Christian. Inside it consists in faith towards God, outside in love towards our fellows” (Luther, Commentary On Galatians).

R.C. Sproul, in his book Faith Alone, wrote: “The Reformers saw saving faith as necessarily, inevitably, and immediately yielding the fruit of works. Martin Luther insisted that the faith that justifies is a fides viva, a vital and living faith that yields the fruit of works.” In spite of this, Chuck Swindoll believes it is heresy and a different gospel to teach that works must accompany sincere faith, and this he does under the banner of the Reformation!

Chuck Swindoll clearly entices the unstudied reader to conceive of The Grace Awakening as a book restoring the stolen truths of the Reformation from the treacherous hands of modern legalists who have perverted them. In truth, however, Luther himself tenaciously fought against the understanding of grace and faith presented in Swindoll’s book.

Like those who rewrite history to bolster their agendas, Chuck Swindoll has changed the history of the Reformation to coincide with his views. Does Swindoll teach that “justifying faith is a vital faith that necessarily yields the fruit of works” as did Luther? Does Swindoll insist that “whoever doesn’t do good works is without faith,” as did the Reformers? No he doesn’t, rather, Chuck Swindoll teaches the opposite: that there is no external proof of salvation or spirituality and that it is heresy to maintain that works must accompany faith. And he does this in the name of Reformation teaching! Is this not dishonest? How can this be anything short of historical revisionism?
