In recent years in particular, the Bodrum Peninsula has become a very popular Turkish destination.

When describing Yalikavak it is easy to use the word tranquillity and be confident that you are not being clichd as despite the words over use in travel media, it fits this town very aptly.

Enjoying the same glorious weather as the rest of the region, it has an ace up its sleeve. There seems to be an almost constant refreshing breeze which provides respite from the hot summer sun whilst also gifting water sports enthusiasts with the wind power they crave.

That same breeze that provides pleasant respite for visitors also brings us back to the windmills. Yalikavak and windmills enjoy a special relationship and a stroll down the sea front will reveal an ancient treasure in the form of a 300 year old windmill. It has survived well, although restoration work is planned, clearly stating the importance the locals bestow on it.

‘Poplars by the sea’ is the translation of Yalikavak and although somewhat ironically the trees surrounding the area are not actually poplars, they do provide a stunning backdrop to the Aegean blue.

What about the beaches I hear you ask, after all I am sure most people would like at least a little beach time when they are on vacation. Preference may be for quiet secluded beaches, or slightly busier beaches or beaches where you can just sit and watch the locals go about their livelihoods, catching fish, as they have done for hundreds if not thousands of years.
